"Thar she blows"

The annual trek from Mexico to Alaskan waters generally begins in January and lasts through April. The Southerly migration then begins again in the late Fall.

The southward move usually extends from early October into January when the first returning whales are spotted headed back north to Alaskan waters after the birthing and mating excursion to Scammon's Lagoon in Baja California. This return trip can last well into late spring.

Along the more than 10 miles of The Sea Ranch coastline, there are many excellent vantage points from which to view one of nature's more specactular sights. Experience the thrill of watching a mother and offspring swim by The Sea Ranch, oftentimes within 100 yards of the bluffs and beaches. For the patient observer, the sight of a mother Grey feeding her offspring is a possibility. Bring your binoculars, prepare a picnic, and find your own private viewing area. Enjoy not only the spectacle of the whales but the natural beauty and solitude of the Sonoma Coast.
