Listservs: The Effective Way to Communicate via eMail!

MCN Listserv Subscription, Un-subscription, Digest, Guidelines and Information page

What is a 'Listserv'?

It is similar to:

  • A paper-based bulletin board

  • A magazine subscription

  • A daily newspaper

A Listserv has these features:

  • It is delivered electronically via email instead of on paper

  • It is an 'opt-in' subscription, meaning (generally) you need to sign up in order to receive the email 'posts'

  • It is 'immediate' - meaning the messages are delivered as they are sent instead of waiting to be printed and sent via postal mail

  • A list server enables you to send email to one email address and have it distributed to ALL of the subscribers of the list simultaneously.

  • It usually has a tight 'focus', meaning a geographical area, or a topic of some sort.

MCN Free Community and Topic Lists: Mendocino Community Network maintains several free listservs for its customers use. Anyone who is a subscriber to a particular list can send e-mail to all the subscribers of that particular list. You MUST first subscribe before you can send email to the list!

Take a moment and explore the 'Community' and 'Topic' Listservs offered for free by MCN.

MCN (MUSD's ISP or Internet Service Provider) offers a public listserv for each community (with a ZIP code) in Mendocino County and has made it available to MCN and non-MCN email users.

The purpose of this service is to promote communication and community within the primary service areas covered by MCN. The list is useful for posting yard sales, 'need a ride', community action events, meeting notifications, fund raisers, and many other 'public service announcement'-types of notices.

We ask that businesses NOT use these lists to promote their goods and services, unless the events posted are free or nearly so. No pornographic or illegal material may be posted. In addition, MCN disavows any responsibility for the content of email postings sent to the lists by the list subscribers. We do not referee disputes, and ask the list subscribers themselves to set guidelines about Appropriate Use (consistent with the above statements). Some community lists are more or less tolerant than others regarding posting indiscretions.

If we have left out any community, or you have questions or concerns about listserv service from MCN, please contact the MCN List Manager at 707-937-1444 or send email to listmanager@mcn.org
