Inspired by the work of Mendocino Unified School teachers, primarily led by Cory Wisnia, Kay Corcoran, and Jessica Morton, we have attempted to present actual responses to Usenet inquiries received by students in our district. All of the responses were in replies to questions generated by students participating in curricular activities.
We also have a number of pointers to Usenet, listserv and e-mail resources for those who would like more guidance and knowledge about posting to newsgroups.
Finally, we hope to become a model. Here in Mendocino, we don't have the resources to host all of the responses of those enjoying success with newsgroup posts and listserv inquiries. We hope other schools will host their materials and eventually someone with major funding will finance the undertaking of a national usenet archive designed for K-12 student use. We'd love to point to other archives maintained by school districts!
With more schools coming on-line, K-12 education cannot hope to continue to bombard newsgroups over and over again with similar questions. To be good citizens on the net, we need to show that we value what we take. We hope this small project is a first step forward in that direction.
The world of usenet news, listservs, and e-mail correspondence is often daunting, to say the least, to many school teachers. While curious about discussions of talking with experts around the globe, many teachers are fearful of what may happen out there in cyberspace.
