Individual Project:
Predicting Population and Services for a
Country
Making accurate predictions about changes in population is important to
governments. Many government services such as schools, medical care
facilities, public transportation, parks and recreation facilities, police, fire, etc.
are all linked to the size of the population. The size and wealth of the
population also determine the tax base from which governments can get
income to provide these services. In this individual project, you can select
any country that is either increasing or decreasing in population.
ASSIGNMENT:
Prepare a report, to be sent to the appropriate government agency of
the country.
In the report you are to make a prediction about population changes
over the next 20 ears and make recommendations about a particular
government service that depends on population size.
In order to do the report, you will have to
- get data on how the population has changed in the past.
- use the data and the mathematical methods you have
learned in this unit to make population predictions for the next 20 years.
- select a particular governmental service that depends on the
size
of the population (such as schools or doctors).
- Make
predictions
about how this particular service might have to change based
upon
your population predictions.
Your report should also include a disclaimer statement that describes
future events which may affect the accuracy of your predictions.
