Welcome to "The Sputtering Edge"! This Math Ed site is PERMANENTLY under construction! This site is being developed to store curriculum developed here at Mendocino High School as part of the Interactive Math Program (IMP). Bon voyage! PLEASE NOTE: If you are at the Middle School web site, (www.mms.mendocino.k12.ca.us/ms/Cur/cw/Math/Math.html), a faster version of this web page (updated every week or so) is at http://www.mcn.org/ed/cur/cw/Math.html. <--- Click here to go to a faster server!

1.

Introduction:

This site is a temporary location for a new Mendocino High School Math Project, in which special problems, open-ended Problems of the Week (POWS) and other Interactive Math Program (IMP) type problems and exemplary student work on open or enrichment problems will be displayed, including challenges for students/teachers from other schools. See below are some of the goals for this page. It is just now getting started, but should be more developed by February and March of 1997. This is a result of the Wizard being asked to volunteer to teach High School Math, including IMP, for the second half of that year, after returning from a wonderful half-year sabbatical! We'll see what comes of it!

3. Challenge Problems:

There are FOUR problems now posted on the page, a fence problem, bathroom tiling problem, a Car Amortization Problem, and a Cookie Game Problem. Click on the link above to see more.

4. Questions & Answers: Teachers

This section is set up to list questions teachers have who are using the new IMP math materials. Questions may include information about units or lessons, hints or questions about POWs, queries about enhancing the curriculum, assessment issues, etc. Answers to these questions will also be posted as time permits.

5. Questions & Answers: Students

This section is set up to list questions student may have who are using the new IMP math materials. Queries may include difficulties with POWs or other material. In this way hopefully teachers can gain important feedback regarding these new materials, and seek to improve the teaching of same. Answers to these questions will also be posted as time permits and if possible.

Okay students, where are your questions? e-mail them to me using the blue mail link below!

6. Posting Problems or Solutions

Above, under the Challenge Problem section, there are two problems posted, a fence problem and bathroom tiling problem. If you as a teacher or student find that the problems listed above need more definition (the fence problem most likely does, although I like to leave problems as open as possible for consideration), you can write to me and I will post your addendums (with credit given). If you wish to take these on, I will post as many student solutions as seem appropriate, or if very many are received, select from some of the more unique, and list credit for all others. There isn't a timeline on these.
If you are a teacher or student and would like to post an interesting, open-ended problem of your own here, as a challenge to other teachers and students, or you would like to share math programs for the TI-82, 83 series, you can send them to
cwisnia@mcn.org

. They will be organized by approximate grade level, strand or subject matter. For example if you write that this is for your Algebra II class or IMP 2 class, it will be listed that way!

Here is a first example:

7. Alternative or Enhanced POWs!

Try out one of these new items or send in your own ideas! The newest one is Flora's New Garden Project! There are several other ones for your perusing---send us more!

8. TI-82,83 Programs of Interest

Do you have an interesting program for the TI-82 or TI-83? If so, send it in and we'll put it on this page for others to try!

9. The TessellExploration Experience!

Recently, our IMP classes were working on an IMP2 Tessellation POW, and we spent some time in the computer lab, using Clarisworks, Flying Colors and Tessellmania, to create some interesting images. If you would like to see these as examples of possible work, then click here to go to our TessellExploration Site! You can make your own and send them to us for posting!
