Giovanni Vacchetta Tarot -
Hand Colored by Alexandra Genetti
|
This is our favorite pre-1900 deck. It was originally published in 1893 in Italy, and has been reprinted by Solleone in the 80s, though it's again out of print. As the originals are all black and white, it lends itself to hand coloring. One of the striking things about this deck is that it foreshadowed the Pamela Coleman Smith deck of 1909 (Rider-Waite) by coming up with more complex treatments of the minor arcana, especially the pip cards. For example, if you take a look at the 9 of wands you can see that it is indeed nine organ pipes! Incorporating everyday objects as symbols in a Tarot deck was very new at this time. Enjoy looking!
On the
next page there are four major arcana cards from the Vacchetta Tarot -- a larger version of the three at the top of this page and also The Moon.
