About White Rabbit

White Rabbit Roses is a specialty custom root nursery. We offer a large array of Old Garden Roses, as well as an eclectic menu of hard-to-find older Hybrid Teas and other classic roses. We will be building an interesting selection of rose-related products as well. For the next few years we plan on remaining small, focusing on building our collection and offering limited quantities of our plants to discerning gardeners who are willing to wait for a plant which is rooted especially for them. Alice Flores, the proprietor, is currently working full-time with an eye to an early retirement at which time she will be able to devote herself entirely to the nursery. Until that time she is simply unable to meet the demands of customers who are insistent on immediate delivery and expect a nursery to keep a complete stock of their offerings available at all times. However, we are happy to serve those who can wait patiently for a rose they may not be able to find anywhere else. We can also promise excellent quality and roses which are accurately identified and labeled.

White Rabbit is also propagating roses that exhibit exceptional qualities of drought-resistance and hardiness which make them ideal for the gardener who wishes to grow roses in less-than-ideal conditions. Alice has researched this subject in some depth and in June of 1997 made a presentation on Found Roses and Xeriscape Gardening at the annual Conference of the Heritage Rose Foundation in Denver. Stay tuned to find a comprehensive list of drought-resistant roses posted on this page. Alice will be happy to provide advice to gardeners on the suitability of roses to their landscape plans (through the Just Ask Alice service on this page) and can be retained for consultations on large-scale installations and on-site visits in Northern California.

Alice is still be growing the same large, healthy roses you have come to expect from her when she was engaged in previous nursery operations. As our young nursery builds up all-new stock, our offerings will be somewhat limited. We will be posting here an ever-changing catalog of the roses we are currently propagating. There will be a listing of when a particular rose will most likely be available for shipping. It is impossible to be exact in creating the availability lists, due to the uncertainties of weather conditions, but we will be as accurate as we can. If you see a rose listed that you particularly desire, it is a good idea to order it well in advance as we consistently sell out of the more popular varieties and an early order will reserve plants for you. Though the catalog currently lists all roses as Available by Custom Root, we often have mature plants on hand which can be shipped any time. Please inquire about the availability of roses which interest you.

We are still a very small Mom and Pop operation. At this time our entire staff consists of Alice and some family members. Alice is holding down a full-time job with an eye to retiring in a couple of years. She is also engaged in caring for a very old mother who is still trying to live independently, and when Mom needs her Alice drops everything else and concentrates on those needs. Thus, we find that we are unable to maintain all of the stock on hand that we would like. It will probably be a while until we can, so we ask for your patience. Meanwhile, in order to give people access to our ever-growing collection, we are moving more and more into custom rooting. We have eliminated the charge for custom-root orders and are allowing people to order directly from our entire list, with the provision that they will have to wait until we can propagate their choices and let them grow to a size that we deem ready to ship. We simply found that we grew too quickly. We have been unable to keep up with the demand for our roses and are trying to find a way to continue to provide them to interested gardeners. Though this will mean some inconvenience for our customers, it is the only way that we can fulfill your desires at this point. If you are unable to find these rare roses elsewhere, it may be the only way you can get them at all. Please feel free to shop around at the other specialty nurseries to see if someone can supply you more quickly. Once Alice has retired she will be able to devote herself to White Rabbit and our supply will quickly expand. Do stick with us through this transitional period.

Because we are so short-handed it has also been difficult to maintain our fairly large correspondence in a timely manner. If you have emailed us and lack a response, please be patient. Alice will eventually get to every email and you will get an answer to your questions. We do enjoy hearing from everyone who writes and look forward to a day when there is enough time for Alice to sit at the computer every day, rather than sandwiching her writing in with all of the other necessary jobs involved in growing our roses. Meanwhile, browse the many informative articles on the page and check out our FAQ in the Ask Alice section. We will continue to update the page and add relevant and interesting writings by Alice and other rosarians.

Another of our services is the Rose Finder. In addition to the regular propagation from our collection, we will do everything possible to find and grow for you any Old Rose that you have been seeking without success. This offer will be primarily limited to roses over 40 years old (with a few exceptions). Just ask. Write us with your request and we will begin the search.

White Rabbit Roses has the goal of providing information about many aspects of rose culture, expanding access to rare and interesting varieties, and growing robust, vigorous own-root plants. If we can fulfill these goals we'll be very happy to see many old-but-not-forgotten roses enjoy a renaissance in the gardens of the 21st century. Our interest in the preservation of old garden roses will thus be met. As our web page grows, come back again and again to see what's new at White Rabbit. We'll stay in touch with you. Please stay in touch with us.
