Jug Handle Trail: Location 9

The sharp-spined plant is gorse, a native of Scotland that was introduced by an immigrant who missed the hedgerows of his homeland. In California it is a problem because it crowds out native plants - notice how much of the area to the south has been covered by it. To return the Reserve to its natural condition, the Department of Parks and Recreation and several private land owners are working on removing it, which is difficult because the plant produces many long-lived seeds and resprouts vigorously when cut.
